Public Service Health Assessment (PSHA) Description

Part1:

Q1.      Identify and explain the effect of the water supply on the development of cholera in developing countries

Cholera is the main public health pandemic globally and its infections are not detected easily and can spread at a very alarming rate within the society. Cholera cases are not detected in the developed countries because of the advanced level sanitation they maintain through good water and sewerage infrastructure systems. The causative agent of cholera Vibrio cholera 01 and 0139 thrives in crowded places, bad water and sanitation facilities. In developing countries the status of water supply and the sewerage system is poor leading to the breakout of cholera problems. The sources of clean water are a problem in the developing countries or the lesser developed countries because of the special management challenges (Eastlake at al, 2016). The most problem include the inadequate drinking water supply and sanitation facilities, pollution of water, floods, the sanitation facilities, the siltation of river systems and the management of river and large dams.

The drinking and water supply and the sewerage systems problem are more pronounced in the developing world than the developed world or industrialized world. There are problems leading to the supply of clean water in the developing world such as the poverty, illiteracy, rapid population growth and ineffective institutions and policies for developing, pricing, conserving and distributing the water recourses. Excess poverty in the sub-Saharan Africa limits the public access to pure drinking and cooking water services making the outbreak of cholera inevitable in the region. Flood prone countries such as Bangladesh also have high chances of developing cholera cases. The racial discrimination and political system of apartheid denied the South African rural black the adequate water resources this was one of the problem that would lead to the outbreak of the chronic diseases such as cholera pandemic. The United Nations has been committed in the improving of the drinking water sanitation and supply but because of limited resources and the unique patterns in the evaluation of the water resources problem in the developing countries.

The agent responsible for cholera

Cholera is a very dangerous life-threatening secretory diarrhea characterized by numerous great watery stools. It is caused in areas with poor sanitation occurring abruptly or limitedly in developing countries. In coastal regions it persists as the selfish and plankton. It is also associated with the raw and improperly cooked foods and drinking water including eating fruits before washing. Over flooding and too many rainfalls also lead to the spread and development of the disease within the society. Overcrowding and poorly maintained public convenience facilities is also a source of the development of the pandemic and high sanitation should be maintained to curb the menace in the developing world.

The symptoms, treatment, and diagnosis of cholera

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of cholera is suggested by the severe water diarrhea and for the faster diagnosis a wet mount of liquid stool is examined with the microscope. Aspect motility of vibrios gets blocked by the specific antisomatic antibody. Other methods are the culture of stool or rectal swab sample on TCBS agar and other selective and non-selective media. There is a recent polymerase chain PCR including the additional genetically based rapid techniques recommended for use in specialized laboratories.

Treatment

Controlling of the outbreak and the escalation of the cholera is the maintenance of the sanitation of an area. Cleaning the toilets and washing hands before eating any food. There is no perfect vaccine problem but a parenteral vaccine of whole killed bacteria has been widely used in the treatment of the problem. The living attenuated genetically engineered mutants are promising but such strains causes’ limited diarrhea as side effect.

Symptoms of cholera

Cholera is characterized with common symptoms including the dehydration developing within hours after the start of the cholera symptoms. The rate of dehydration various from mild to severe depending on the amount of water lost from the patient’s body. There is also Nausea and Vomiting occurring especially in the early phases of cholera and might persist with time. The Cholera victims Diarrhea and the loose motion come regularly and quickly making the patient’s loss much water (Boyle et al, 2016)

Relationship between the water supply and cholera

Cholera is passed through the use of contaminated water and the supply of bad water would lead to the development of the outbreak of cholera. The supply of non-contaminated water by the government and the non-organizations body would reduce or thwart the break out of the pandemic. Adequate house hold water treatment and safe water storage are ongoing challenges and all the sources of water should be reviewed and kept safer to reduce the pandemic.

Public health efforts to reduce cholera illness in developing countries

The simpler way of keeping cholera infections at bay is maintaining of the thorough cleanliness within the residential places and the water used. Public health has tried to maintain the hygiene of various environments to reduce cholera infection. The WHO has provided the mass campaigns vaccination programs to treat many individuals in the society reducing the rate of the pandemic. Many cholera vaccines have been developed and proven to function well on the cholera patients by the WHO.

 Part 2:

Q2.      Public Service Health Announcement Develop a public service health announcement

PSA are the perfect opportunity for the nonprofit groups communicate a message through the mass media. Most of the advertising outlets apply the use of PSA in announcing their views. The public service announcements are the short messages produced on film; videotape CD, VCD, audiotape and the computer files given to audio and video stations. The public service Announcements are always passed to the air through audio or video clips. The PSA are published or broadcast in advertising space which is unsold and must follow the similar guidelines as paid advertisement. PSAs should have public service messages, not only promoting organizations image. There exist less expensive alternatives for delivering the current messages so the motivating perfect audience.

It’s the warning by the WHO about the development and the spread of the most chronic disease cholera in the developing countries. Developing countries are more affected than the industrialized nations mainly because of the existence of the well organized sewerage and water supply systems.

The disease develops and spread from one person to the other through lack sanitation within the environment. The world health organization and the state government are striving to eradicate the problem of by supporting and initiation of various measures to curb the menace. Most individuals within the society must embrace cleanliness to ensure the elimination of the disease.

African and Asian countries suffer mostly from the problem of the cholera and it has been proven beyond doubt that more awareness and treatment is to be adopted by the effected society to scrap out the disease. The countries are among the developing countries which are more vulnerable to the impacts of the pandemic. High level of sanitation must be maintained within the society to reduce the spread of the cholera in the breakout (Ned-Sykes et al, 2016).
