Empowering Nursing Practice

Empowering Nursing Practice

There have been continuous challenges in the nursing practice today. The seriousness with which healthcare issues need attention is high and the quality of the services directly depends on the success of these issues. Currently, the increase in these challenges has rendered the nursing services a very big challenge and the morale of offering quality services is reduced. With the currently increasing population, it would be challenging to give better services with a constant situation. This paper focuses on how to empower nurses and to ensure that there are quality services in the sector.

The current staffing in the nursing sector is low. The population is rapidly increasing and the services becoming several. The laxity of getting new trained professionals makes the services hard for the remaining population. The direct effect of this is that the quality of the services given to the patients will not be as high as if there were enough staff to aid in the work. The ration of patients to that of the nurses is quite high and this reduces the concentration of the available nurses on reduced number of patients. Getting more qualified persons from the colleges and giving them good training can improve the services and the quality on patients (Huston, 2014).

Secondly, the nurses are exposed to several hazards. In cases of emergencies, little care is taken when handling the patients and this exposes the nurses to health risks. There are several diseases that can be contagious through any means. These means are hardly considered when patients with emergencies are handled until the urgency of the treatment is handled. In cases of accidents and some patients being in very critical conditions, the nurses work under pressure. These conditions require better protection and steady personnel who can handle the emergencies in time. For every emergency, motivation should be given to the nurses in terms of collective awards or other incentives (Stein & Deese, 2014).

Because of the nature of work of the nurses, there is always a mandatory overtime for them. In these cases, the nurses are forced to stay late in the night and from the high pressure; chances of making mistakes on the patients are high. In such scenarios, the nurses are forced to work on fresh conditions and in this tired state, they end up making mistakes. On this note, there is a tendency of some patients making phone calls to the nurses even if they are out of work. In as much as the overtime is paid, a free and relaxed mind is necessary for quality work. To empower these nurses, giving them some days off work during the week would give them the morale to offer quality services (Cipriano, 2011).

Nursing as a career has a lot of issues. These issues have led to the condition where nurses do not enjoy their work anymore. Lack of personal choices, having to deal with all kinds of patients, too much work with reduced nursing population and force overtime are hard to deal with. In handling these situations, the profession can be enjoyable and this will improve the quality of the services. The chances of handling these conditions are low with the current little support. The pressure from the increasing population and different diseases that keep on coming up has made the working conditions hard. Without properly addressing the issues, the profession will be hard to deal with and always a burden.
